Be the Change

Following up on some comments I've had from Sumeet Bhatti, I was thinking hard about my earlier post. What can we do to bring about change? I came up with a template - three pages, that you can print out and circulate to your favorite Indian movie store.

The first page is: Be the Change. Ask store managers to put this up prominently near the videos. The second page is a review - I've provided a review of Jinnah. If they don't have Jinnah, you can provide a review of your own favorite to start off. This should also be displayed prominently as a recommendation of the month. The third page is a title - "World Class Cinema" to be displayed on a shelf where only great movies like this will be kept.

The first page explains how this can be a sustained effort, driven entirely by a community of customers.

The good news is, I went to the store here in Arizona, and the proprietor took all of two minutes to say yes, he was going to do this. He will keep me informed if his sales of such films go up with this strategy.

Do go ahead and hit your local store. Remember to give them your email address so they can tell you how it goes. Also, you can spur it on by participating and providing reviews of great cinema.

Here is the Word Document that you can download and print.

Hi Somik, "Be the change" sounds like a good idea. It's a bit like "Pay it Forword." Do try it out; if it works, I might want to try it here in amchi Chennai.

I have noticed that most films that come under the category "good cinema"
(1)Are missing from theatres (Case in point: I want to see Buddhadev Dasgupta's "Kaalpurush" but no it's not screening in a theatre nearby; "No Entry" is, which even if I'm paid to, will not see)
(2)Are available as DVDs
(3)Get good reviews
(4)Are thrashed by my Bollywood-bred friends (there are exceptions, of course)
(5)Are throughly enjoyable (I really liked "Mr and Mrs Iyer.")

Hi SOmik,

The only constant thing is change. Though we are part and parcel of this process, getting out of your comfort zone requires tremendous courage. Why not become the change we want to see in the world???

Cheers
